Girls Basketball Semifinal Picks: Heritage, E. Lansing picked to play for 'A' title; Country Day to face Jackson Northwest in B finalBasketball  |
There are sure to be a few surprises this weekend when the girls basketball tournament enters the semifinal and finals rounds.
The first surprise happened last year when it was announced the semifinals and finals would move from the Breslin Center in East Lansing to Grand Rapids and Calvin College.
The other surprises will take place on the court. Take Class A for example. Wayne Memorial is not only making its first trip to a semifinal but the Zebras won their first regional title last week. The other three teams have all won state titles.
In Class B there’s a familiar face in Detroit Country Day but the other three teams are relatively new to these surroundings. Kingsley reached a semifinal 10 years ago but that was in Class C. It’s been 13 years since Michigan Center made it to the semifinals and that was also in Class C. Center reached the state final in 2005 and ’03. Jackson Northwest has never been to a state final. Country Day has won 12 state titles including last season and in 2015.
Detroit Edison is the defending champion in Class C and it will play Pewamo-Westphalia, a team it defeated in the final last season. In the other semifinal, Ypsilanti Arbor Prep reached the Class B final last season and it won the Class C title in 2016. Maple City Glen Lake won the Class D title in 1978 and hasn’t been to a state final since 1979 (Class D). It did reach the semifinals in 1990 and ‘94.
Mount Pleasant Sacred has been ranked No. 1 all season in Class D and its only state title came in 2014. Sacred Heart also lost in the final in 2016. Adrian Lenawee Christian, Sacred Heart’s semifinal opponent, lost in a state final in 2010 to a team, Waterford Our Lady of the Lakes, that’s in the other bracket. Lakes’ opponent, Chassell, in the lone team from the Upper Peninsula in Grand Rapids this weekend and has never reached a state semifinal before this season.
All semifinals and finals are at Van Noord Arena on the campus of Calvin College in Grand Rapids
