Rapid Reaction – 5 Reactions to the MHSAA Football Pairings

1.)    The Division 1, Region 1, District 1 group of Grandville, Rockford, East Kentwood and Rockford might be the most even district in the entire state. Any of those four teams could wind up moving onto the Regional round, but any of them could also be sent home after the first round.

2.)    Who can beat Orchard Lake St. Mary’s in Division 3?

With Muskegon moving up to Division 2 this year, the Eaglets have to be the heavy favorites to repeat in Division 3 and could roll through each of their games leading to the Division 3 championship game. St. Joseph could give the Eaglets a tough game if the two teams are to meet in the state championship game at Ford Field, but the Eaglets are easily the most complete team in Division 3 and should be able to win their second consecutive state championship.

3.)    There are several outstanding round 2 matchups that could happen.

In Division 1, West Bloomfield and Detroit Catholic Central could be the most intriguing round 2 matchup if they can earn wins in round one. West Bloomfield and its high-octane offense led by Mr. Football candidate against an outstanding Catholic Central defense and a Shamrock team having a great rebound season after missing the playoffs last season.

In Division 2, Muskegon and Mona Shores could have a Week 8 rematch where Mona Shores won, 21-18, but the winner of that game has a very good chance to make another appearance at Ford Field at the end of the postseason. Also in Division 2, keep an eye on the potential matchup between Walled Lake Western and Farmington Hills Harrison.

In Division 5, Portland and Lansing Catholic could face each other in the second round and Lansing Catholic will be looking to avenge a blowout loss from earlier in the year as the Cougars will look to make another long playoff run.

4.)    Could Detroit King and Cass Tech end up winning state championships?

Both Teams have a tough road to get to Ford Field, especially King playing in Division 2. But both teams are as talented as any team in the state and if they make it through what could be difficult third round matchups with King possibly facing defending Division 2 state champion Warren De La Salle and Cass Tech possibly facing last year’s Division 1 runners up, Saline, there is a very good chance both teams win state titles.

5.)    Several teams should be on upset alert in the first round of the playoffs.

There are a handful of round one matchups where the favored teams need to be careful and not look too far ahead in the playoffs.

Warren De La Salle has aspirations of winning a second straight Division 2 state title, but the Pilots have a very difficult match up in the first round against a good East English Village Prep team. The Pilots enter the game as the favorite, but cannot afford to overlook East English.

St. Clair Shores South Lake should advance to the second round where it will face Detroit Country Day, but should face a difficult test in Cranbrook who is also 8-1 this season.

While Cass Tech should be one of the favorites to make it to Ford Field, but our own Jon Kidd said that the Technicians should be on upset alert against a Warren Mott team that has played them tough in the past couple of meetings and also had a strong start to the 2015 season.
