Catholic Central defeats Grandville, 5-0, to reach fourth consecutive state final

Plymouth - Detroit Catholic Central showed its dominance in Division 1 again on Friday.

The Shamrocks earned the right to defend its state championship with a 5-0 victory over Grandville on Friday night at USA Hockey Arena.

C.C. (22-7-1), making its fourth consecutive final appearance, will take on Brighton (23-6-1) in a rematch of last year’s state championship on Saturday at 6 p.m.

“I try to look at each year as a new year because you always have a new group of kids that come into your program. The target is always on our back,” Catholic Central coach Brandon Kaleniecki said.

“That comes with the territory, though when you play for us. We’re just really happy to be playing hockey on the last day of the season because that’s what you hope for.”

Catholic Central took a 1-0 lead 5:12 into the first period when junior Dylan Montie ripped a shot on net. Senior Jack Chartier screened the goaltender and deflected the puck to secure the lead.

The Shamrocks looked to sophomore Rylan Clemons to lead the charge in the second and third periods.

“He’s been a good player for us all year. He stepped up right from the get go. You look at his numbers and look at the way he’s produced. We weren’t sure if he’d be on the varsity team,” Kaleniecki said.
