BOYS BASKETBALL RECRUITING: Some Movers & Shakers Make Noise During Signing WeekBasketball  |
Last week was a big week in the state’s prep boys basketball ranks, as National Signing Day brought college connections and defections on the local recruiting landscape.
Cleveland State (coached by PSL product and former Eastern Michigan assistant Gary Waters) swooped in at the last second and scooped up a pair of the top prospects in Metro Detroit.
Both North Farmington swingman Jeron Rogers and Detroit Cass Tech’s off-guard Rob Edwards inked with the Vikings in final-hour commitments.
Rogers (6-foot-6 1/2) is the No. 1 ranked small forward in the state’s Class of 2015, according to a number of scouting services. He’s deadly from outside, is a finisher on the fast break and tough to guard in his mid-range attack. A four-year starter at North Farmington, Rogers, the son of retired NBA center and Detroit Northwestern grad Carlos Rogers, has averaged 17 points and 10 rebounds over the past two years.
Edwards (6-foot-3) is a bulldog of a two-guard, a gritty rebounder and on-ball defender and hard to stop on the perimeter on offense – smooth in his shooting stroke and powerful in his move to the rack. His stock soared last winter in Cass Tech’s tourney run, where the Technicians won a district and advanced into a Class A regional championship game, (losing a controversial 52-51 heartbreaker to Detroit U-D Jesuit), and Edwards shined with his clutch play.
As Rogers and Edwards found their homes at the next level at the last moment last week, Wayland Union swingman Lacey James de-committed from the University of Detroit-Mercy in the days leading up to Signing Day. James (6-foot-6 1/2) currently holds additional offers from the University of Toledo and Western Michigan and will wait until next spring’s Signing Day to finalize his college plans.
