GRAND RAPIDS — Size doesn’t always win, but it doesn’t ever hurt.

Flint Hamady used its size inside to dominate the boards against Lake City, and control the second half of Thursday’s Division 3 semifinal, winning 42-33 to advance to their fifth championship game in 13 seasons.

Since 2006, the Hawks won Class C titles in 2009 and 2010, and finished as runners-up in 2006 and 2015.

Hamady also won the Class C title in 1983, beating Pewamo-Westphalia, Saturday’s opponent in the D3 championship game.

Lake City (22-2) hadn’t been back to the semifinals since winning the Class D title in 1976.

Hamady (21-5) trailed Lake City by two, 20-18 at the half, but held the Trojans to 27 percent shooting in the second half, outrebounding them 37-27 for the game.

Bigs Aryana Naylor had 10 points and eight rebounds, while Treshondra Wiliams had nine points and 12 rebounds.

Makayla Ardis had 14 points to lead Lake City.
