Adams bounces back from consecutive losses to defeat Stoney Creek, 50-35
Rochester Hills — With the memory of its 10-0 record to begin the season fading away following two straight losses, Rochester Adams took the court against Rochester Hills Stoney Creek on Thursday hoping to regain some confidence against a division rival.
By and large the Highlanders did just that. Adams came away with a decisive 50-35 victory behind a 20-point performance by senior Amber Jamison and effective defense.
Adams (11-2, 2-2 Oakland Activities Association Red Division) seized control early with a strong first quarter and later pulled away just after halftime to make for an anticlimactic conclusion.
"We finally knocked down some shots,” Adams coach Shay Lewis said. “The past two games, which were losses to Clarkston and North Farmington, we were shooting 21 or 22 percent. We can’t get in any type of rhythm if we’re not going to hit shots.
"We hit shots tonight, we got after it on defense and we got out and ran. Those are the things in our DNA. That’s our character."
Adams shot 42 percent, while Stoney Creek struggled at 21 percent.
Jamison made an impact at both ends, coupling her game-high 20 points with nearly as many rebounds to record a double-double.
"We knew Amber was going to dominate in the post tonight. We just felt like one-on-one, we could win those matchups," Lewis said.
The Highlanders surged out to an 18-9 lead after one quarter thanks to a trio of early 3-pointers.
Stoney Creek’s best opportunity to draw back into the game came in the second quarter when it held Adams scoreless for more than six minutes, but only managed to score six points during that time.
"Adams was stuck on 18 for quite a while,” Stoney Creek coach Brad Crighton said. “We had layups, but we couldn’t finish. That was the thing. We cut it to five at the half, but then they hit some nice baseline jumpers when we didn’t rotate to the bottom to open the third.
"We were very cold shooting and we didn’t get many offensive rebounds, so the second-chance points weren’t there."
Making matters worse for the Cougars was their poor free throw shooting. They made just 10-of-23.
The Highlanders bumped their lead back into double digits by scoring the first six points of the second half, never looking back.
Adams also received steady contributions from sophomore Maggie Rogers (12 points) and Ryian Owusu (five).
Stoney Creek (10-4, 2-3) was led by senior Maria Zandi’s 12 points. Sophomore Emily Solek added nine points, six rebounds and four assists.
Both teams return to action Tuesday with Adams visiting Farmington Hills Harrison and Stoney Creek traveling to North Farmington.
The midway point of divisional play rapidly approaches and both teams have work to do in order to track down division leader Southfield-Lathrup, which, at 4-0, is the only team without multiple division losses.
