ADDIX All-Star Game canceled for 2020, may yet be played in virtual format

By: MATTHEW B. MOWERY, June 3, 2020, 4:08 pm

Working with the host site officials at Hope College, the ADDIX All-Star Game organizers held out as long as possible, hoping for a way to play this year’s contest, but announced its cancellation on Tuesday for safety reasons.

The ADDIX All-Star Game has been played in early June the last four years, and honors west-Michigan football players.

“Officials from Sports ADDIX and Hope College have been keeping a close eye on the COVID-19 pandemic that has swept across the United States, including here in Michigan. After careful consideration for the welfare of our players, coaches, fans, and workers, it has been decided the 2020 ADDIX All-Star Game is to be canceled. This was not a decision that was taken lightly, and we explored every option available,” ADDIX organizers said in a news release Tuesday.

“While we are disappointed we are unable to play this year, we have coordinated with (the media) to release this year’s drafted rosters (see below). This year’s draft class was one of our biggest and best group of student-athletes we’ve ever had, with over 70 Michigan communities represented.”

In lieu of the money that would have been generated by the game for Gilda’s Club Grand Rapids, ADDIX has donated $5,000 to the charity.

Next year’s game is tentatively scheduled for June 4, and organizers are discussing a possibility that this year’s game may be played in a virtual format. If it happens, it would be sometime later this month.
