BASKETBALL: Detroit Pershing Boys And Detroit King Girls Victors In Double-header
DETROIT – The below freezing temperatures may have gotten the week off to a bad start, but two of the city’s best programs continued their hot steaks on Friday.
Detroit Pershing and Detroit Martin Luther King faced off in a boys and girls double-header, with the Pershing boys and King girls coming away victorious.
The Doughboys pushed their record to 5-1 on the season, with a 63-50 win over the Crusaders. The win came without star guard Marquel Ingram and Pershing having to play a back-to-back against Detroit Consortium the next day.
Senior guard Mory Diane led all scorers with 18 points and rebounds. Diane also played well on the defensive end against King’s Tyrone Acuff, who finished with 10 points.
King led Pershing 12-11 early in the second, but a 15-8 run by the Doughboys to end the quarter made it 27-19 and they never looked back.
Justin Tillman had a strong second half, finishing with 16 points and 11 rebounds. Darsean Woodson chipped in 11, while Dwayne Embry added seven points and nine boards.
A Dayvon Austin bucket and a foul made it 36-35 Pershing with 2:47 left in the third, but an 8-0 run, capped off by four Diane free throws pushed their lead back to nine, at 44-35.
Austin paced King with 15 points and nine rebounds, while junior Armani Lee dropped in 14 of his own.
King dropped to 3-3 on the season and will face Detroit Southeastern on Tuesday.
In the second game of the double-header, the King Lady Crusaders handled the Pershing Doughgirls, 69-17. King never trailed in this one and led by 51-8 at the half.
Mart’e Grays led the way with 21 points and 13 rebounds, most of that coming in the first half. She sat out the entire fourth quarter.
Just like most of their league games, King was too much for their opponents, scoring at will and playing tough defense.
Two players scored for Pershing, with Brittany Hill leading her team with 11 points. Pershing fell to 2-2 in the
PSL East Division 1.
King improved to 8-1 on the season, with Avon Forts and Lashai Geeter both scoring 10 points and Micaela Kelly adding nine.
The Lady Crusaders next game is a make-up game against rival Detroit Cass Tech on Sunday afternoon.
