Basketball Recruiting Notebook: Brandon Johns looks to make college decision over summer
East Lansing – It’s no surprise that Brandon Johns grew up a Michigan State fan.
Johns, who is from the Lansing area and is a junior at East Lansing high school, which is just minutes away from the Michigan State’s campus.
But the recruiting process has presented a lot to think about as Johns indicated after Friday night’s win over Holt that he’s considering or has received interest from Michigan, Texas, Kansas, Florida State, Indiana, Wisconsin, Alabama, Iowa and LSU along with Michigan State and noted that the Wolverines and Spartans are very much in the mix.
Johns said that while he grew up as a Michigan State fan and takes regular visits to the Breslin Center, he has become more neutral and is keeping his options open.
“I grew up in a Michigan State family and they all really supported that team, so of course I grew up liking them,” he said. “But once the recruiting process started, I’ve had to even it out and be more neutral.”
The 6-8 junior power forward said he hopes to make a college decision by this summer, before the start of his senior year.
East English Village Prep’s Greg Elliott gaining attention on the recruiting trail
Greg Elliott has been one of the fastest rising names on the recruiting scene since the start of the season as he recently landed an offer from Marquette and has received interest from several other high-level Division 1 schools, including Michigan State.
Elliott poured in a game-high 27 points and eight rebounds in East English Village Prep’s win over Detroit King on Tuesday in front of Marquette coach Steve Wojciechowski and Providence coach Ed Cooley. Michigan State, Pittsburgh and Oakland were all reportedly in to watch Elliott in East English’s win over Detroit Edison.
Former Saginaw Arthur Hill star Brian Bowen named to McDonald’s All-American Game
Brian Bowen, who played his first two years of his high school career for Saginaw Arthur Hills, helping lead the Lumberjacks to the Class A Final in 2015, was named to the McDonald’s All-American Game on Sunday.
Bowen, who has played for La Lumiere Prep in Indiana for the past two years, is a regarded as a 5-star recruit and remains uncommitted, but has Arizona, Michigan State, Creighton, North Carolina State and Texas in his top 5.
The 6-6 small forward is ranked as the No. 19 player in the class of 2019 and according to Scout.com’s Evan Daniels, Bowen is expected to take an official visit to East Lansing on January 29th and will make a decision after.
