BASKETBALL RECRUITING: Talent-laden trifecta of underclassmen have D1 scholarships already shored up
Oh, very young.
And very good.
There are currently three underclassmen in the state’s boys basketball ranks that have already secured Division I college scholarships.
Drake Harris (Grand Rapids Christian), the state’s most high-profile two-sport star, is committed to Michigan State and Luke Meyer (Addison) and Corey Redman (Boyne City) are each committed to Central Michigan.
Harris (6-4, 200), a dynamic point guard on the hardwood and a prolific wide receiver on the gridiron, will play both basketball and football in East Lansing. Back in the fall, Harris led Grand Rapids Christian to a state title, registering a season for the record books. He had 91 catches for 25 touchdowns in 14 games, eclipsing the 2,000-yard marker for only the twelfth time in United State prep history. In the Division 3 state championship game, he caught eight balls for a state finals-record 243 yards.
As a sophomore last season on the basketball court, Harris averaged 20 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists and 3 steals per game on a team that made a run into the Class B quarterfinals.
Both Harris and Meyer are juniors, while Redman is only a sophomore.
A silky-smooth 6-foot-5 wing, Redman started on varsity last season as a freshman, averaging 12 points and six rebounds per game, helping take Boyne City to a Class C district crown. Upping his scoring average to 18 points a game through the early-part of this year’s schedule, Redman shoots close to 50 percent from beyond the 3-point arc.
Like Harris, Redman is a standout football player in the fall. Winning the starting signal-calling job in training camp this year, he quarterbacked the Ramblers to a 8-1 record and into the playoffs for the first time in three seasons.
Meyer is a 6-foot-10 power forward that has Addison out of the gate to a 4-2 start while averaging a double-double of 22 points and 11 rebounds per contest.
Redman and Meyer are big recruiting-grabs for first-year Central Michigan head coach Keno Davis.
Coming over to Central Michigan after stints on the bench at Drake and Providence, Davis is the son of former Iowa head coach, Dr. Tom Davis. Central Michigan is 7-5 so far this year.
