Ben Freeman of Walled Lake Central named as the first winner of State Champs Mr. Wrestling award

Walled Lake – Ben Freeman of Walled Lake Central has been selected as the winner of the first State Champs Mr. Wrestling contest.

Freeman is the 22nd wrestler in state history to win four state title. His career record is 163-1. Freeman was 34-0 in the 140-pound weight division this season.

As a junior Freeman won at 135. His sophomore season he wrestled at 125 and as a freshman he won at 103.

He will attend Michigan on a wrestling scholarship.

Freeman comes from a family of wrestlers, which includes his father and two brothers.

The contest started with 10 wrestlers and then there were four finalists named. The other three finalists were Trent Hillger of Lake Fenton, Dom LaJoie of Gaylord and Drew Marten of Tecumseh. LaJoie was the winner of the online vote.

Freeman, who has a 3.6 grade-point average, is also one of six finalists for the Detroit Athletic Club male athlete of the year award.
