BEST OF MICHIGAN: Byron continues unbeaten start, rolling past Carleton Airport
BELLEVILLE — There are teams that just seemed to be on the precipice of breaking out each season.
This season’s version of that might be the Byron Eagles.
Byron finished last season at 17-4, two of those losses coming in overtime against eventual Division 3 runner-up Flint Hamady, and three of the losses by a combined 10 points.
The Eagles have started this season 3-0 after beating a Goodrich team expected to contend in D2, blowing past league rival Ovid-Elsie, and rolling over a D2 Carleton Airport squad, 53-42, in at the Best of Michigan Holiday Classic at Belleville High School on Saturday.
All-stater Sarah Marvin had a monster night for Byron, with 14 points, 19 rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Makayla Clement had a team-high 23 points on 10-for-13 shooting, adding six steals and seven assists. Haley Hooley added 11 points.
The Eagles shot 37 percent for the game, but used an advantage in the transition game — scoring 27 points off 22 Airport turnovers (generated by 17 steals), and 12 fast-break points to none for the Jets (2-2).
Byron trailed 15-12 after one quarter, but used a 17-5 bulge in the second to lead 29-20 at the half and 45-31 after three quarters.
Bailey Martin led Airport with 18 points and 10 rebounds.
