Bishop Gallagher to honor new hall of fame inductees on Wednesday

Harper Woods – The third annual Harper Woods Bishop Gallagher Athletic Hall of Fame awards banquet will be held Wednesday at the building that was home to the former Detroit Catholic League school located at the I-94 service drive just north of Moross in Harper Woods. Ceremonies will begin at 6 p.m.
Last year 16 were inducted and the same number will be inducted this year including the Batten brother, Rahim and Ramon, Dave Stavale, Wasean Tate, Jesse Johnson, Glenn Young, Dan Vargo and Jim Gruzalski.
This year’s induction ceremony will feature the start of the George Sahadi Memorial Scholarship Fund. Organizers of the event expect to raise $35,000 or more for this year’s fund. The purpose of the fund is to lend financial aid to individuals who will enter high school in at a Catholic institution. Sahadi was the face of the Bishop Gallagher football program. Sahadi died in June of 2006 at the age of 62. Sahadi starting coaching at Bishop Gallagher in 1971 as an assistant coach. He became head coach two years later and remained as head coach until 2001 when the school closed.
Former Michigan coach Lloyd Carr will present a check to this year’s recipient of the scholarship fund.
A special recognition will be presented to the members of the 1992 team that was the first in school history to reach a state final. That season the Lancers lost to Traverse City St. Francis in the Class CC final, 28-21, in double overtime.
As many as 18 players from that team are expected to attend.
Former Bishop Gallagher player and vice president of Lear Corporation Jeff Spicuzzi is the master of ceremonies.
