Ann Arbor-Bound – Cass Tech Secondary Stud Will Wear Blue

By: Scott Burnstein, November 17, 2016, 12:30 pm
Detroit Cass Tech football star Jaylen Kelly-Powell is preparing for Saturday’s state-semifinal clash with Utica Eisenhower by getting his college plans in order. Kelly-Powell, a 4-star safety and the top player on the defensive side of the pigskin in the Mitten’s Class of 2017, committed to the University of
Michigan earlier this week. Many recruiting services tab Kelly-Powell the No. 1 safety prospect in the entire Midwest region of the United States.

Now, all the NOTORIOUS JKP will be doing for the forthcoming ten days is focusing on the crown. As in THE RING. As in the BLING, BLING!! Nationally-ranked Cass Tech (12-0) is favorited to win the Division 1 state championship next week at Ford Field.

The 6-foot-1, 185-pound Kelly-Powell is a genuine gridiron genius. He could easily have the highest football IQ in the state. He’s been calling signals for the CT defense for the last two years, directing traffic, barking out assignments, recognizing mismatches. Think Ed Reed!!

The decision to “Go BLUE” is a return to Kelly-Powell’s initial verbal commitment to the Wolverines back in the spring, which he vacated in the fall to explore other options. Announcing his choice via a social media video, he selected Michigan over Oregon, Ohio State, Nebraska, Wisconsin, UCLA and Virginia Tech. He intends on enrolling in January. Word out of Ann Arbor is that once he hits campus this winter he will be mentored by Jabril Peppers for his ‘Viper’ role on the Maize&Blie ‘D’ (a hybrid safety-linebacker position).
