Catholic League temporarily switches venue for football championships

ORCHARD LAKE — While the Catholic High School League’s annual fall football media day doesn’t usually rule anyone out definitively, this year’s event emphatically delineated who won’t be going to Ford Field for the CHSL championships.
And that’s everybody.
Given a scheduling conflict with the venue — which is hosting the third of three days’ worth of Luke Bryan concerts on Saturday, Oct. 26, the Week 9 date when the CHSL championships would normally be — the league will go back to its roots, and hold the title contests at Eastern Michigan University’s Rynearson Stadium.
The Prep Bowl, featuring the first- and second-place teams from the AA Division, will be at noon, followed by the Cardinal Division championship — the first-place team from the Intersectional 1 Division vs. the top squad from the Intersectional 2 — will be at 2:30 p.m. The heavyweights from the Central Division will play at 5 p.m. for the Bishop Division championship.
While the CHSL championships won’t be at Ford Field, the league will still play games at the venue this fall, with a three-game Week 8 slate on Saturday, Oct. 19. Dearborn Divine Child will play Orchard Lake St. Mary’s at 1:30 p.m., followed by the Downriver battle of Riverview Gabriel Richard vs. Allen Park Cabrini at 3:30 p.m., and capped off by Detroit U-D Jesuit vs. Warren De La Salle at 6 p.m.
