MIDWEST RECRUITING: Eisenhower’s Ian Kennelly kicks off GVSU football’s 2019 class

Grand Valley State snagged its first football recruit for the Class of 2019 when Utica Eisenhower senior safety Ian Kennelly committed to the Lakers over the weekend.  Finishing 2018 with a 10-2 mark, GVSU is a DII power out of the GLIAC and usually fills its recruiting class late once the DI crops have pretty much taken form.

The relentless Kennelly (6-foot-2, 185 pounds) was a three-year starter in the secondary at Ike and one of the sharpest and most consistent performers in Macomb County these last few seasons. He also played a little quarterback for the Eagles this year.

Ike was the No. 1 team in the MAC during the 2016 and 2017 campaigns, going a combined 23-2 and advancing into the Division 1 final four in ’16. Last year, Kennelly collected 50 tackles. This fall, he racked up 75.

Kennelly held offers from Ferris State and Illinois State as well. Ike alum and Kennelly’s former prep pigskin teammate Jack Provencher (RB) is currently a redshirt freshman on the GVSU roster.
