MIDWEST RECRUITING: Ovid-Elsie’s Morris, Clarkston’s Mattson Go DI With Happy Feet

The MHSAA’s M&M Boys don’t rap. They kick. And right now, they’re both basking in the bright light of their firecracker feet.
The two best football kickers in the state recently found places to play at the next level, as Ovid-Elsie’s Evan Morris committed to Michigan State and Clarkston’s Tristan Mattson committed to the University of Buffalo.
Morris is rated the No. 1 kickoff specialist in the nation according to multiple scouting services. Mattson is the latest college-bound kicker plucked from the Wolves Den in Clarkston, a program that has developed into a breeding ground for high-quality legs over the past decade.
Besides booming the ball on special teams, the 6-foot-6 Morris also plays wide receiver for his prep club. He’s projected as a punter in college. Last month, Mattson drilled three field goals (two more than 40 yards apiece) in defending Division 1 state champion Clarkston’s 30-21 defeat of Southfield A&T on the road.
Clarkston currently has three former players kicking in the college ranks: Alex Kessman (Pittsburgh), Shane Hynes (Kent State/South Carolina/Wayne State) and Jermaine Roemer (Ferris State). Roemer’s first-half 30-yard field goal in the 2018 state finals against favored West Bloomfield proved the game-winner for the Wolves.
