MIDWEST RECRUITING: Penn State snares De La Salle’s Toutant, U-M/CMU lose several to decommits
From state crown to State College
A day after winning a D2 state title, Warren De La Salle junior offensive lineman Grant Toutant (6-foot-6, 285 pounds), an agile and aggressive presence at the point of attack, visited Happy Valley and committed to Penn State. De La Salle took care of Muskegon Mona Shores 29-16 at Ford Field for a repeat state championship Friday. That night, he took off for Nittany Lion Land. The next day, the 3-star prospect watched No. 12 in the nation PSU pound Maryland 38-3 and ended his recruitment with a pledge.
Toutant’s recruiting began heating up last month. He grabbed his PSU offer, along with bids from Wisconsin, Indiana and Pitt, in the past six weeks. Included in his training regiment is gymnastics which keeps him surprisingly nimble for his size.
Leaving Big Blue
Belleville senior defensive end Tyrece Woods de-committed from Michigan late last week. The diversely-skilled 6-foot-2, 260-pounder, transferred to Belleville in the offseason from Detroit King, where he won a D2 state championship as a sophomore. Woods can play linebacker as well. His speed and closing power make him a true force in the pass rush. His high grades in the classroom make the Ivy League a possible landing spot. Belleville (12-1) lost to eventual state champion Chippewa Valley in the D1 final four earlier this month.
Chippewa decommits
A pair of Cass Tech two-way standouts, Kyron McKinney-Harper and Ormondell Dingle, both pulled their commitments from Central Michigan University in the wake of the Chippewas’ firing of head coach John Bonamego. Detroit King quarterback Dequan Finn, the winner of the State Champs! Mr. Football Award for 2018, said he hadn’t come to a decision on whether or not to stick with his previous commitment to CMU.
The offer alley
Canton senior defensive end Darius Robinson (6-foot-6, 265 pounds) just picked up a Michigan offer with the Wolverines hoping to replace Woods in their upcoming recruiting class with another Metro Detroit quarterback cruncher. Tabbed a 3-star recruit, Robinson could gain 4-star status before Signing Day. He holds almost two dozen offers. Prior to Team Harbaugh entering the picture, he was said to be deciding between Michigan State, Colorado, Maryland, Rutgers and Syracuse.
Port Huron Northern junior defensive end Braiden McGregor (6-foot-5, 255 pounds) was a bit surprised when Alabama gave him an offer at a recent visit, recruiting him to play tight end.
Dearborn junior wide receiver Tommy Guajardo (6-foot-3) nabbed his first power conference offer last week when Boston College dropped a bid at his doorstep. Eastern Michigan, Kent State and Northern Illinois have all offered too.
Cass Tech sophomore center/defensive lineman Raheem Anderson and River Rouge junior running back De’Andre Bulley both picked up offers from Kentucky.
