Retired NFL player Lamanzer Williams was hired as the new football coach at Auburn Hills Avondale this week. He replaces Steve Deutsch, the long-tenured Yellow Jackets sideline general who retired following the 2015 campaign.

Williams played in the Big Ten in the 1990s and then in the NFL in the 2000s for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Miami Dolphins, respectively, as a defensive end. He was the head coach at Ypsilanti last year, winning a league title. The 41-year old is an alumus of Willow Run High School Class of 1993.

After garnering All-Big 10 honors as a senior in college with the Golden Gophers, Williams was selected in the 6th Round of the 1998 NFL Draft by the Minnesota Vikings.

Deutsch led Avondale’s football program for 14 years, compiling a 73-61 overall record and guiding his Yellow Jackets into the playoffs six times. Williams inherits an Avondale club that went 4-5 in 2015 out of the OAA Blue.
