Recruiting Round-Up: Van Sumeren To Hawkeyes, Hastings Becomes Bulldog

One of the state’s top football players and one of the state’s top boys basketball players committed to colleges over the weekend.
Essexville Garber linebacker Ben Van Sumeren committed to Iowa on the gridiron, while Wyoming Godwin Heights’s forward Markeese Hastingscommitted to Butler on the hardwood.
Van Sumeren (6-foot-3, 230 pounds) de-committed from Western Michigan back in the summer after starting to generate power conference interest. He can play either outside or inside linebacker and visited Iowa last weekend following the Hawkeyes offering him the weekend before.
Hastings also used the summer to increase his recruiting profile, impressing on the showcase camp and AAU circuit. The 6-foot-6 ½ grinder is a beast on the boards for his size and is a tough stop on his mid-range game.
He is Butler’s first commitment of the Class of 2018. Earlier this month, his teammate Lamar Norman committed to UTEP. Norman is an all-state combo guard and he and Hastings will form one of the best inside-outside combos in the MHSAA this winter for Class B power Godwin Heights.
