STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Iron Mountain’s Foster Wonders realizes his dream of playing DI hoops, committing to Southern Illinois

Foster Wonders had a dream of playing Division I hoops, and on Monday, he made another step toward making that dream a reality, committing to Southern Illinois.

The 6-foot-5 rising senior shooting guard from Iron Mountain made the announcement on Twitter early Monday afternoon, picking the Salukis.

“As a kid, my dream was always to play Division I basketball. I knew how hard it would be to get to this level, so every day, I committed myself to improving every aspect of my game. Every early morning and late night in the gym, all the sacrifices, it was all worth it,” Wonders posted on Twitter. “The people that doubted me only added fuel to my fire and made me work harder to achieve my goals.”

Wonders chose Southern Illinois from a slew of offers, including Central Michigan, Miami (Ohio), Oakland, South Dakota State, Toledo, Wisconsin-Green Bay and Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Wright State, among others.

Wonders ranked as the No. 14 player in the state, regardless of class, on the STATE CHAMPS! Preseason list entering last winter. He helped lead the Mountaineers to the Division 3 finals as a sophomore, and to a 21-1 record entering the district finals at the time the 2019-20 season was halted by the COVID-19 pandemic. Iron Mountain’s only two losses over the last two seasons were to Pewamo-Westphalia in the 2019 D3 title game, and to Negaunee on March 5 of this season — both by a single point.
