STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: Rounding up recent grid commitments across Indiana — Johnson To NIU, Borders & Schott Pick Miami (OH)

By: , March 15, 2020, 1:29 pm

JoJo Johnson (Merrillville 5-foot-11, 175 Jr. WR) — The recent Morton transfer committed to Northern Illinois earlier this month. Last season, he was a lethal weapon on both sides of the ball, scoring 11 touchdowns on offense and snatching six picks out of the secondary on defense. At Merrillville, Johnson will join forces with Armani Glass in the 2020 campaign to give the Pirates (11-2, sectional title back in the fall) a potent 1-2 punch in the passing game. He’ll replace Jeremiah Howard, all state senior split end destined for NIU, in the Merrillville lineup.

Kolby Borders (Lafayette McCutcheon 6-5, 300 Jr. OL) — Miami (Ohio) came into the Hoosier State and grabbed this road grader in the trenches for its 2021 recruiting class earlier this month. Borders displays toughness and durability and is the definition of tenacious every snap. Don’t be shocked if Big Ten schools enter the picture before the start of his senior year.

Jackson Schott (Center Grove 6-2, 190 Jr. LB) — Center Grove’s versatile linebacker committed to Miami (OH) earlier in March, pulling one of the state’s best front-seven pass defenders off the board. Schott is fast and aggressive sideline to sideline, he’s speedy on the outside and more than smart enough inside to play in the middle quarterbacking a defense. In 2019, he collected 45 tackles, two sacks and made 10 deflections in pass coverage.

Boilering up for the weekend

The two best prospects in the state’s sophomore class, Gibson Southern signal caller Brady Allen and Indianapolis Brebeuf defensive end Joe Strickland both visited Purdue on March 7 to take in the Boilermakers basketball game against Rutgers. Allen is the No. 1 overall quarterback recruit in Hoosierland. Strickland is the top recruit on defense for the state’s Class of 2022.
