STATE CHAMPS! SCOUT TEAM: South Bend St. Joseph’s Konieczny picks Notre Dame

By: , August 20, 2019, 1:50 pm

Notre Dame nabbed one of the Hoosier State’s top scorers over the weekend as South Bend St. Joseph’s junior small forward Doug (JR) Konieczny decided to stay home for his college hoops by committing to the Fighting Irish. The 6-foot-7 sniper dropped in 24 points per game last winter.

Konieczny (pronounced KA-NEZ-NEE) has had an incredibly productive offseason on the AAU circuit, putting some weight on his rangy frame and improving greatly on his finishing ability at the rim. Although he’s a natural scorer and ace marksman from downtown, the St. Joe’s star has the ball-handling skill of a point guard.

Iowa offered him this summer. Butler, Creighton, Bradley, Valparaiso and Miami (OH) also threw bids on the table.

Notre Dame plays in the ACC and made back-to-back Elite 8 appearances in the NCAA Tournament in 2015 and 2016. The Fighting Irish went 14-19 in 2019.

Come 2021, Konieczny will be one of the frontrunners for Mr. Basketball. Bloomington South’s Anthony Leal, the preseason favorite in the 2020 Mr. Basketball race, committed to Indiana last month.
