Technically Speaking – Cass Tech Cagers Are For Real In ’17
Defending PSL boys basketball champ Detroit East English Village is generating the most buzz in the city right now and rightfully so, the ‘Ville is VICIOUS and gunning for the Breslin Center. But Burney likes what he’s seeing from Detroit Cass Tech so far this winter too. Don’t look past the Technicians cage crew aka TEAM HALL because this squad is rounding into shape quite nicely and should be a true contender come March. Sitting at 6-1 after the holidays, I think Cass Tech can give EEV a run for its money, especially with the addition of three talented transfers following MLK Day.
Senior captain Leonard Silas, sixth-man extraordinaire Marcus Gibbs and fab frosh floor general Tyrone Acuff anchor the CT backcourt. An all-league pick last year, Silas is crafty, poised and unselfish. Coming off the bench, Gibbs has been the Technicians leading scorer and catches heat in a hurry. Acuff impresses with his hoop IQ and obvious natural instinct at the controls of an offense. Joining the mix in two weeks when they finally get eligible will be Matt Richmond (Harper Woods Chandler Park Academy) and Chris Murray (Muskegon), a pair of 6-2 junior off guards more than ready to rip and roar in their new digs.
On the wing, senior TeRonnie Cook and sophomore Kahlil Whitehead are splitting time and compliment each otherwell, with Cook (6-foot- 1 ½) getting the nod if CT wants to unleash a smaller, faster lineup and the long, lean Whitehead getting more clock (6-foot-5) if the Technicians desire to go big. Cook can lock down on defense, Whitehead will be a force the more he plays.
Expect Detroit Renaissance transfer and junior forward Jalen Tobias (6-foot-7) to make a GINORMOUS impact in the post for CT come mid-month and might turn out being the X-Factor in the whole PSL race when it’s all said and done. Already holding things down on the blocks for CT are power forward Randy Gilbert and center Michael Green. Gilbert plays with a nasty streak that should rub off on Tobias and up the ante with the Technicians hardwood attack even further.
