The Point After – New Times, New Faces

By: Scott Burnstein, September 1, 2015, 12:56 am

A pair of breakout performances in Week 1 of the 2015 high school football season that caught Burney’s eyes:

Tim Cheatham (Detroit Cass Tech) – After what I saw Saturday in the Technicians’ 27-0 stomping of Southfield from CT’s junior Timmy Cheatham has led me to nickname this fleet-footed, quickly-emerging star in the backfield, “The Motor City Cheetah,” because he’s fast, elusive and deadly….Mikey Weber who? It appears if you give this kid an inch and he’s going to take a mile. Exhibit A: he busted up the Bluejays for 100 yards on the dot and two trips across the goal line (34-yarder in the second quarter, a4-yard backbreaker in the fourth) and looked mighty nifty in the process. Cheatham will be the next BIG THING to come out of the gleaming Cass pigskin pipeline, please make a note for your official records….and remember your boy Burney told you FIRST!!  Don’t worry all you college recruiting fiends, I always got your back!!

Jamison Scarber (Farmington Hills Harrison) – Was that senior Jamison Scarber or NFL all-pro Dez Bryant out there on Friday in the Hawks’ valiant season-opening loss to East Kentwood? Scarber couldn’t be stopped, he scorched the EK secondary for 3 touchdowns in his first game in a featured role in Harrison’s aerial assault, including a game-tying 35-yard scoring grab down the stretch. With Tyrone Lyte lost to transfer (Southfield), Scarber is the MAN and he showed it Friday when it counted the most. This young man is a superhero in the slot, so watch out, he’ll make opponents pay across the middle with underneath routes and beat them deep with his killer wheels.
