The World Is His – Kid From The Westside Bags A College World Series Ring

Shout out to Portage alum Cole Schaefer for winning a NCAA National Championship this week as a member of the Coastal Carolina Chanticleers. Coastal Carolina got the job done in upset fashion over Arizona in the College World Series. The title was clinched Thursday afternoon with the Chanticleers’ 4-3 victory in Game 3 of a best-of-three format.
A junior right-handed hurler, Schaefer is the only Michigander on the Coastal Carolina roster. He had a 3.79 ERA this spring. His senior season on the diamond as a prepster at Portage in 2013, he was 7-3 with a 1.33 ERA and 57 strikeouts. Over his entire high school career toeing the slab, he went 14-4.
Coastal Carolina entered postseason play this season ranked No. 22 in the country. The Chanticleers finished the campaign 55-18. They were making their inaugural appearance in the World Series, the first club to raise a crown in its first time in the Series since the 1950s when the University of Minnesota did it.
Way to go Cole, thanks for repping The Mitten with so much pride, passion and poise! That championship ring is going to be gleaming from the mountains of the Carolinas all the way up to your home state and the Great Lakes. Can you say BLING, BLING?
