Westland John Glenn’s Joe Moon is playing money ball and has blasted onto the scene as a legitimate Mr. Basketball candidate practically out of nowhere. Brad Pitt eat your heart out.
The 6-foot-1 combo guard posted back-to-back 37 and 38-point performances in the Rockets’ final two games of 2018 and Glenn was 3-0 entering the New Year, before taking its first loss against Muskegon.
Moon is the best kept secret on the hardwood in Metro Detroit. But it’s really only a matter of time. His game speaks so loud, word of his POWER BALLING is on the verge of spreading around the state like wildfire.
Combine a textbook shooting stoke with great court vision, body control and finishing ability and you have Moon’s game in a nutshell. And he’s wicked efficient. He’s connecting on more than 60 percent of his shot attempts.
In terms of the Mr. Basketball race, outside of frontrunner Romeo Weems (New Haven), it’s a wide open field. Judging by early results, Moon has a very good chance of being a finalist for the award despite not being in the discussion in the offseason. Moon’s sudden candidacy reminds me of what happened in 2016 when Rochester Adams’ Spencer Littleson (Toledo) snuck into the race riding an early hot streak and wound up finishing third in the balloting.
One thing’s for certain, Moon is a young man on the move. Moving up that is. Next stop: Penthouse suite aka, statewide fame, DI scholarship, & increased positioning in the run to the Mr. Basketball finish line.
