Zeeland East lineman commits to MSU; Paw Paw lineman commits to U-M

Zeeland East junior defensive end Adam Berghorst committed to Michigan State this week. Berghorst (6-7, 255 pounds) is the Spartans’ seventh grab for their 2019 recruiting class and is expected to play baseball when he gets to East Lansing as well. He had 75 tackles and recorded 7 sacks last fall as part of a Zeeland East club that won a league title (OK-Green) and put together an undefeated regular season. Scouts tab him a 3-star prospect. In baseball, Berghorst pitches and plays first base. His fastball has been clocked as high as 90 mph. Besides MSU, he had scholarship offers from Michigan, Notre Dame, Northwestern, Nebraska, Minnesota, Kentucky, Purdue, Indiana and Boston College.
Joining Berghorst in being Big Ten bound in recent days, Paw Paw junior offensive lineman
Karsen Barnhart committed to Michigan. The 6-5, 285-pound tackle is agile and active at the point of attack and known for his excellent footwork in the trenches. Like Berghorst, Barnhart is a 3-star recruit and a dual-sport standout. In basketball, he averaged 12 points and 11 rebounds per game. Michigan State, Arizona State, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska, Minnesota, Iowa State and Kentucky had all offered. Michigan is also a finalist in the running for 4-star Walled Lake Western quarterback Sam Johnson, slated to choose between the Wolverines, Boston College, Iowa, Missouri, and Syracuse on Monday
Mike Sawchuk stepped down as football coach at Plymouth last week after a dozen years on the job so he can return to Florida, where he previously paced the sidelines in the early 2000s. The Wildcats qualified for the playoffs in eight of Sawchuk’s 12 seasons and appeared in the D-1 state championship game in 2010. Sawchuk is the son of NHL Hall of Fame goalie and Detroit Red Wings great Terry Sawchuk. In his tenure at Plymouth, he posted 73 victories.
Sophomore quarterback Anthony Romphf has transferred from West Bloomfield to Southfield A&T. The backup signal caller on West Bloomfield’s 2017 Division 1 state finals team, Romphf (6-1, 180 pounds) is expected to start for A&T this fall. A&T went 4-5 last season. West Bloomfield will start C.J. Harris under center (the Lakers’ JV starter last year), as the replacement for all-state QB Bryce Veasley, who enrolled early at Bowling Green.
