BOYS BASKETBALL: Adams cagers dancing to a winning beat
ROCHESTER HILLS – The Rochester Hills Adams boys hoopsters are stealing the show.
Before the start of the 2012-2013 campaign, the Highlanders were forced to play second-fiddle in the headlines to crosstown rival Rochester and its brand new All-American transfer James Young (Troy).
Then the season tipped-off.
While Rochester has been very good, Adams has been great.
The Highlanders haven’t lost yet.
On Tuesday night in front of its home crowd, Adams beat Rochester, 49-31, to gain a season sweep of its intra-city rivals.
The win runs Adams’ record to a perfect 19-0 and snares the Highlanders a league championship in the Oakland Activities Association White Division.
At the forefront of the squad’s arsenal is a whopper of a one-two punch in junior point guard Akhemji Williams and senior forward Zack Littleson. Williams is a playmaker in every sense of the term and is quietly making a name for himself as one of the top backcourt prospects in the states Class of 2014. Littleson does damage inside and out with the best in the area, possessing the rare ability to shoot and bang equally well.
The pair are both savvy vets, cutting their teeth on a 2011 Highlanders’ club that took home a district championship and made a trip into the regional finals.
Holding things down in the post is the nails-tough tandem of Andrew McBride and Ben Limb. Each can rebound and score the ball with ease around the rim.
Senior role players Jack Twitty and Sam Gasiorowski are both ace defensive-stoppers. They teamed to limit Young, a Kentucky-signee and McDonald’s All-American, to a career-low three points in Adams’ downing of Rochester back in January.
Twitty usually starts and is assigned the opposing team’s star. Gasiorowski’s gritty contribution off the bench has been a pleasant surprise, especially when you consider he didn’t even make the team during tryouts last year.
C.J. Borglin is a do-a-little-bit-of-everything type that chips in with effort and leadership.
“This is a group of players that have come up together through the program and to see them having this kind of season is really cool and a testament to what kind of competitors they are,” Adams head coach John Hall said. “They deserve everything they’ve gotten. No matter how this year ends, it’s been a tremendous success in so many ways. I don’t think anyone involved will ever forget their experience this season. That’s how special it’s been.”
When the Highlanders collected their 18th victory of the year last week they became the school’s all-time leader in single-season wins.
