BOYS BASKETBALL: Former Flint Southwestern 2016 SF Miles Bridges continues to blossom
Grand Rapids – Huntington (WV) Huntington Prep sophomore Miles Bridges transferred out of the state of Michigan from Flint Southwestern last year. He made his return The Great Lakes State to play in the Grand Rapids Storm Classic.
The 6-6, 190-pounder played up an age bracket, running with The Family 17-Under team. On a team loaded with talent, much like his high school team, Bridges didn’t have to do much, but displayed his all-around game. He can score it inside and out, rebounds well for a small forward and can make plays for others.
"Today I had some bad games,"he laughed. "I couldn’t get anything going, but at the end I grabbed a few rebounds, got in the paint a little bit, so that was good."
The Family 17-Under squad got off to a slow start in a way, only beating R.E.A.C.H 17-Under by five, quickly gained some chemistry, going undefeated in their bracket.
"We just had to get more active," said Bridges "We had to start blowing teams out just to show them that we are here."
Miles, who Rivals.com has ranked as the 33rd best sophomore in the nation, also helped his Huntington Prep team to a 28-5 record this season, averaging 10.2 points, 10.1 blocks, and 3.4 blocks per game.
"My season went great," he said. "We made it to the final four and I got better when I moved there. We just had a great overall team."
Bridges’ move from Flint to West Virginia has really helped him grow and become of the best players in the country. Prep-schools like Huntington have helped a lot of young men go on to be successful at the next level, like OJ Mayo and Andrew Wiggins, and Bridges has the chance to be next in line.
"The move was great," he said. "I got my grades up there, it’s a great environment in Huntington and just a great place to be."
Even before Bridges was playing on ESPN in national high school showcases, he was already making a name for himself in Flint. He holds offers from Providence, Oakland, Michigan State, West Virginia and Kansas.
"Ohio State, Kentucky, and Oklahoma State have been on me hard as well," he said. "I’m looking to hear from North Carolina though. They are my dream school and I always wanted to go there."
Bridges didn’t express much interest in Michigan despite being from here. It’s still early in the process for him, so you never know how things will turn out.
"I’ve heard a little bit from Michigan," he said. "But I’m not really interested in them. They might not be a good organization for me."
Flint has been a pipeline for Michigan State for years and Bridges is no exception. The Spartans may be the leader for his services, even though he plays in another state now.
"I love Michigan State," said Bridges. "I hear from them a lot and they are going to be a top-three team in my recruitment."
Bridges says he plans to takes visits to Oregon and Providence in the future and will just continue to play AAU basketball to work in order to develop his game. He also plans on attending the Lebron James Skills Academy July 8-13.
"These next couple of years I need to continue to improve on my perimeter skills, post-game, and my defense especially," he said.
