BOYS BASKETBALL: Rochester’s Young earns All-American honors, will compete in McDonalds game

ROCHESTER – Local prep boys basketball star James Young will be making a trip to McDonalds in April.

We’re not talking Big Macs and fries though. And he won’t be going through the drive-thru, either.

Young, Rochester’s 6-foot-6 ½ senior swingman, was selected to represent the West squad in the annual McDonalds All-American game, which is set to be held April 3 in Chicago at the United Center.

The two-time first-team all-state pick is the only player from the state of Michigan heading to the elite showcase game. Recruiting experts rank him a Top 5 talent in the country. Many area scouts declare Young a, ‘once in a decade’ type.

Over the years the game has produced dozens of future NBA all-stars and is a badge of honor bestowed upon only 24 prepsters in the entire United States. The 2013 rosters were announced late last week.

After playing his first three seasons of high school hoops at Troy, Young transferred to Rochester in the fall.

Rochester is currently 14-2 and in search of its third straight league title, while Young has been torching the competition to the tune of 28 points, 18 rebounds, six assists and five steals per night.

Next season, he will be playing his college ball for defending NCAA National Champion, Kentucky. His recruitment garnered so much attention, he announced his decision of what school he would attend at the next level on ESPNU, broadcast live to a television audience back in November.
