BOYS BASKETBALL: Romulus Holiday Tournament filled with exciting games

ROMULUS – Loads of great hoops action was on tap at the annual Romulus Holiday Tournament over the weekend.
The host Eagles came away with a pair of resounding victories, taking out Detroit Community 70-53 on Friday and then dusting Detroit Douglas 77-52 Saturday.
Moving its record 4-1, Romulus, a squad stacked with Division I college talent, had a spread-out score sheet. Rhode Island-commit EC Matthews led the way, scoring a game-high 17 points in both wins. Louisiana Tech-commit Leo Edwards put up a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds against Community and Missouri-commit Wes Clark and Jalen Plummer, a wing who is being recruited to play at the Division I level, scored 16 points apiece in the Douglas game.
Going on a trip to the Class A final four last year, Romulus is once again one of the most dangerous teams in the state.
Friday saw Pontiac, River Rouge and Walled Lake Western each post tallies in the win column as well.
Pontiac improved to 3-1, beating Detroit Henry Ford 69-60 behind senior guard Dijon Cogdell’s game-high 27 points.
River Rouge (4-2) got a game-high 26 points from Terrell Crawford in the River Rats 69-60 topping of Detroit Cody.
Walled Lake Western slipped past Southfield Christian 54-48 led by John Flowers 17 points and double-doubles from the frontcourt of Marcus Bailey (16 points, 15 rebounds) and Miroslav Jaksic (15 points, 12 rebounds).
On Saturday things wrapped up with Ann Arbor Pioneer, Novi Detroit Catholic Central, Harper Woods Chandler Park and Gibraltar Carlson all taking home wins.
Pioneer pushed its record over the .500 mark, going to 3-2 by downing Detroit Southeastern, 62-60, receiving a game-high 24 points from Jibreel Hussein.
Catholic Central kept its record win-loss mark perfect, as the Shamrocks (3-0) bulldozed Ypsilanti Lincoln 60-41, getting 16 points, six assists and three steals from junior point guard Mitch Katkic.
Like Catholic Central, Chandler Park (3-0) is still undefeated following the Romulus Holiday Classic, winning a 78-72 track contest 78 over Toledo Rogers. Michigan-commit and Mr. Basketball earl-season frontrunner Derek Walton busted loose for 38 points in the victory.
Gibraltar Carlson (4-1) knocked off Belleville 58-41, led by Kaine Irwin’s game-high 20 points.
