Thompsonville – First round leader Emmie Pietila of Brighton shot 2-over par 74 but that was still good enough to maintain the lead after the second round of the 22nd Michigan Women’s Open at Crystal Mountain Resort on Tuesday.

Weather conditions offered the record field of 112 some challenges after a picture-perfect day in Monday’s opening round. Temperatures reached the mid-60s. Rain and wind contributed to higher scores. And that included Pietila’s total.

Pietila, who plays at Tennessee, shot 64 on Monday and sits at 6-under 138, one stroke up on fellow amateur Sarah Hoffman of Saline. Hoffman is a former Grand Valley State golfer and nurse at the University of Michigan Hospital. She shot 73 following her round of 66 on Monday.

Caroline Powers, a former Michigan State player now playing professionally, is three shots back at 141 after carding a 4-under 68. Her 68 and a 66 by Alliance, Ohio, pro

Mary Snode, a pro from Ohio, shot 66. Those were the only sub-70 rounds on the day.

Two other professionals, Kendall Martindale of Jefferson City, and Ally McDonald of Fulton, Miss., are tied for third with Powers.

The final round of the $40,000 event will be played Wednesday at the Mountain Ridge Golf Course.

Only one amateur has won this event. Breanne Hall of Kentwood (East Kentwood High) won the event in 2003.

The top professional will take home $6,000.
