Cass Tech puts Northwestern away early in 57-0 blowout win

By: Branden Hunter, September 1, 2012, 12:15 am

Coming off a 25-18 win last week vs. Brother Rice, Cass Tech opened up PSL play this week against Northwestern. "Coach Wilther said if we didn’t score 50 we had to run this week in practice", said Cass Tech DB/WR and Michigan committ Jourdan Lewis.

Cass Tech apparently took the advice to heart.  Led by their defense which didn’t allow Northwestern to drive past their own 50-yard line, and two big special teams touchdown by Lewis, Cass Tech defeated Northwestern 57-0.

Lewis provided a lot of the sparks in this one, with a 27-yard punt return in the 1st quarter and 80-yard kickoff return in the 3rd. Northwestern looked over matched in all three phases of the game. They couldn’t run or pass the ball against Cass Tech’s defense, and couldn’t stop Cass tech sophomore QB Jayru Campbell who provided the additional punch, passing for three touchdowns and rushing for two others.

Campbell threw a 30-yard touchdown pass to Daquan Pace with 6:14 left in the 1st quarter and added a 15-yard touchdown pass to Damon Webb with 3:17 left in the 1st quarter. He also scored on a 2-yard touchdown run with 6:41 on the clock in the 3rd quarter and scrambled for a 44-yard touchdown run with 1:14 left in the 3rd before being taken out the game. By halftime Cass Tech was up 42-0 and began using the full game clock to keep the game running. With a big lead, Coach Thomas Wilcher benched most of his starters in the third quarter and let some of his second team players complete the shut out.
