Detroit Cass Tech 2013 Preview
Head Coach: Thomas Wilcher
Last season: 12-2, won second consecutive Division 1 state title
Key Players: The Technicians return one of the top overall players in the country in Ohio State commit Damon Webb. He’ll anchor their signature defense at the cornerback position, along with senior linebackers Will White, and Deon Drake (Michigan State). Juniors, quarterback Jayru Campbell (Michigan State) is back as a three-year starter, and running back Mike Weber is poised to have another 2,000-yard rushing season.
Good: No team in Michigan can match the talent Cass Tech puts out on the field each year. You don’t win two state titles in a row without some type of talent. This team has seven players with Division 1 offers on it, and even the younger guys are expected to make huge contributions this season. The defense will be Cass Tech’s strong point again this year, with the offense being solid as well.
Bad: The biggest question facing this year’s Cass Tech team is how will their offensive line hold up. Having to replace four starters isn’t an easy task at any level. Junior Josh Alabi is expected to move to left tackle, and sophomores Ostell Martin (6-5,320) and Michael Onwenu (6-3,320) should add much needed bulk, and gain experience.
Overview: Besides it’s highly anticipated showdown with Southfield High in the first game of the season, Cass Tech has a fairly easy schedule again. They should run through their PSL-West Division, and play for a league title. The state playoffs are when they are at their best, and if they don’t have a major hiccup in the regular season, should be playing for another state title.
