COLLEGE RECRUITING: Grand Rapids sees trio of prep stars snag scholarships
GRAND RAPIDS – Three of the Grand Rapids area’s top prep athletes landed at the next level in the past two weeks, finding places to play their respective sports in college.
Let’s take a look at whose going where (in alphabetical order).
Khadim Dieng (Grand Rapids North Pointe Christian) – Probably the most imposing big fella on the hardwood from the state’s prep ranks that you don’t know about, Dieng, a 7-foot-0, 210-pound center from Senegal inked with Western Michigan University. Why does almost nobody outside the Class C North Pointe Christian program know the skinny on Dieng? Because he didn’t play basketball as a senior after the MHSAA ruled him ineligible at the last second in December, following his transfer from prestigious Oak Hill Academy in Virginia. Impressing local scouts with his performance throughout the 2013 AAU summer season, displaying athleticism, shot-blocking ability and raw instinct for the game, Dieng was being recruited by a number of DI and D2 schools, besides WMU, including, Eastern Michigan and Northern Illinois.
Myles Miller (Grand Rapids Ottawa Hills) – An athletic and intelligent combo guard on the basketball floor, Miller signed with Grand Valley State University. Averaging 17 points, four assists and four rebounds per contest and sporting a razor-sharp 3.9 GPA in the classroom, he led Ottawa Hills to a Class A district championship back in the winter, finally ending his prep hoop career in the Sweet 16 (regional finals).
Jon Wassink (Grand Rapids South Christian) – One of the state’s premiere quarterbacks on the football field for the Class of 2015, Wassink committed to Western Michigan University, fresh off two straight seasons taking the GR South Christian Sailors to repeat appearances in the Division 4 state finals. During the 2013 campaign, he threw for 2,200 yards and 16 touchdowns.
