GRAND RAPIDS — This is the type of game that usually trips up Pewamo-Westphalia.

The Pirates have made deep runs in the postseason any number of times, but had only gotten over that semifinal hump three times, finishing as runners-up in 1983, 1984 and 2017.

The Pirates outlasted Ypsilanti Arbor Prep, 37-33, in overtime in the Division 3 semifinals, outscoring the Gators, 7-3, in the extra period to move on to Saturday’s championship game.

Pewamo-Westphalia (26-1) will face Flint Hamady (20-6) in the title contest at 4 p.m., at Calvin College’s Van Noord Arena, angling for their first title.

Hannah Spitzley was 5-for-6 from the line, finishing with a game-high 16 points, and drew the assignment of guarding Mya Petticord in the second half and overtime, holding the Gators’ freshman sensation to just two points after halftime.

Ellie Droste added 15 points for P-W, while Petticord led Arbor Prep (19-7) with 14 points, and Kashyra Jackson had 10 points and eight rebounds.
