D4 VOLLEYBALL SEMIFINALS: Defending champ, No. 1 Mendon holds off No. 4 Southfield Christian in 5

BATTLE CREEK — Defending Division 4 champion and No. 1 Mendon survived a five-set scare from No. 4 Southfield Christian in Thursday’s first semifinal at Kellogg Arena, winning 27-25, 17-25, 19-25, 25-22, 15-13.

Anna Smith led the Hornets (39-9-6) with 36 kills, adding 12 digs, while Taylor Heitkamp had 13 kills and Juliana Hagenbuch had 25 digs. 

Caitlin Warnshuis had 25 kills and 24 kidgs, while Emily VanDyke had 31 kills and 16 digs for Southfield Christian (29-8-4), which lost in this same spot to this same opponent for the second straight year. Last year’s loss was a three-set sweep, where the Eagles didn’t surpass 18 points in any set.
