Destiny Pitts’ 20 points leads three players in double figures as Country Day downs Haslett, 69-56
Haslett – Detroit Country Day traveled to Haslett high school Tuesday night in a rematch of the 2015 Class B girls basketball final, a game won by Country Day, 49-41.
Haslett moved up to Class A this season but the game still had drama and the game featured a bit more offense with a similar result.
Country Day is 13-1 and ranked No. 1.
Country Day junior Destiny Pitts had 20 points, including 11 in the second quarter, to help her team to a 69-56 victory.
“I knew that if I stepped up we could get a bigger lead and build on it,” Pitts said. “Once we got adjusted and knew what we were doing, we started stretching out the lead in the second quarter and we started playing together.”
Country Day coach Frank Orlando said he was excited for his team to face off against Haslett again.
“It’s a great environment for basketball. Haslett has a great tradition and coming in I thought it would be a great game for us because I knew what we were going to face,” Orlando said.
Haslett (12-2), ranked No. 7, struggled in the first quarter as the Vikings trailed, 12-4.
Megan Mowid heated up in the second quarter for Haslett, scoring eight of her team high 18 points.
In the third quarter Haslett managed to cut the lead to eight but the Yellowjackets had a run of their own and ended the quarter with a 48-32 lead.
Haslett’s Sydnee Dennis caught fire in the fourth scoring 13 points including three 3-pointers.
Haslett kept trying to make the game interesting, and even outscored Detroit Country Day 24-21 in the fourth quarter, but Detroit Country Day made 10 free throws to seal the victory.
Guard Kaela Webb, who scored 20 points in the state final for Country Day, had with 14 points and five assists. Webb’s teammate, Tylar Bennett, recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds.
“(Webb and Pitts) are both seasoned players now, even though they’re a sophomore and a junior, but they’re seasoned because they’ve been in so many tough ball games so when this comes to passing a ball game you look to them to be leaders and they handle the pressure real well,” Orlando said. “As far as those two, they’re winners, they’ve been winners and they’ll stay that way so it was a good game for us.”
