Detroit Cass Tech looking to do an overhaul of its athletic department?

DETROIT – Yesterday The Detroit Public School League website posted a status on their Facebook, page, stating that "Cass Technical High School will be holding interviews for all coaching positions and the athletic coordinator’s position. Interested candidates should contact Cass Tech principal Lisa Phillips and/or Cass Tech assistant principal Christa Reeves at 313-263-2000."
The statement comes as a shock to us all, being that Cass Tech has one of the top athletic departments in the state. Their football program has won two straight Division I state titles (’11,’12), while making it to four straight Division I state semifinal games (’10-’13). They are also just as competitive in boys and girls basketball, as well tennis, swimming, and track.
Sports media information director for DPS, Chuck Johnson, runs the website and Facebook page, but didn’t have much information as to why Cass Tech was looking to hold coaching interviews.
"No one has gotten fired," he said. "But they are interviewing for coaches. That information came straight from Cass Tech; I’m just the sports information director."
I have no interest in any of the positions, but a call to assistant principal Christa Reeves only left more questions on the table.
"We are interviewing for coaches, but there is no reason as to why," she said.
Then why hold interviews for a job, if you’re not trying to fill a spot? Cass Tech wide receivers coach Cash Caldwell is probably thinking the same thing.
"Interesting isn’t it," he said. "I wish I had answers, but I don’t. We’ll see."
Defensive coordinator Jermain Crowell also seemed surprised about the news and didn’t have much to offer as well.
"We will see," he said.
State Champs will continue to bring more updates, as more news develops.
