DIVISION 6: Monroe SMCC converts just enough to eke out 7-0 win over Maple City Glen Lake, win third state title

DETROIT — Miles might separate the school buildings for Maple City Glen Lake and Monroe St. Mary Catholic Central, but inches separated the two squads from winning and losing the state title.

The Falcons got just enough yardage to sneak out a 7-0 win over the Lakers, clinching their third state title, and first since 2014.

Averaging nearly 400 yards per game on the ground coming in, SMCC (12-1) was held to a little over half that (249), but still got the inches when they needed it, converting four of five fourth downs, and racking up 22 first downs in the game, nearly doubling up the Lakers (12-2) in time of possession.

Wyatt Bergmoser scored the game’s only points, running in a touchdown from 6 yards out on SMCC’s second drive, and adding the PAT.

The key conversion came on a fourth-and-2 from the SMCC 33-yard line, with Jace Worrell picking it up with a 2-yard slam up the middle. The drive, which started at the SMCC 5 with 10:15 left in the game, eventually stalled out at the Glen Lake 40, but the 14 plays chewed 7:48 off the clock, leaving just 2:27.

Four plays later, Caden Smith sealed the game with a fourth-down interception, giving the Falcons the ball back with 1:49, allowing them to kneel out the clock.
