Emoni Bates becomes fourth player to win Gatorade Michigan Boys Basketball Player of the Year honors twice

By: MATTHEW B. MOWERY, March 19, 2020, 7:51 pm

He might not get to finish his sophomore season with a trophy — just yet anyway — but Ypsilanti Lincoln’s Emoni Bates is still bringing home the hardware.

Bates was named the Gatorade Michigan Boys Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, after averaging 31 points and 10 rebounds as a sophomore.

Lincoln assistant AD Katie Moffett tweeted out congratulations Thursday evening.

The defending Division 1 champions, Bates’ Railsplitters (19-3) were expecting to be playing in the district finals against Ann Arbor Huron (21-1) last Friday night, before the postseason was put on ‘pause’ by the MHSAA, to help slow the expansion of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Bates became the fourth player to win the Michigan award in consecutive years, joining Detroit Country Day’s Chris Webber (1989-90 and 1990-91) and Ray McCallum Jr. (2008-09 and 2009-10), as well as Bay City Western’s Matt Costello (2010-11 and 2011-12).

The Lincoln sophomore was also named the the Naismith High School All-American second team this week.

Bates also put his name in the record books earlier this season, with a 63-point, 21-rebound outburst against Chelsea in a double-overtime win.
