FOOTBALL: Campbell to face the music, Cass Tech star QB to be charged with assault
DETROIT – All-state quarterback and Michigan State football-commit Jayru Campbell will be charged with two counts of assault this week, according to a warrant filed in Detroit’s 36th District Court downtown.
The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office will hold a press conference Tuesday afternoon to announce the charges against the Detroit Cass Tech superstar that has led the Technicians to a pair of Division 1 state titles and was arrested more than two weeks ago following an incident at the school.
Campbell was videotaped body slamming a Cass Tech security guard on January 22 in a school hallway and taken into custody a few hours later. He was held behind bars for two days, released the evening of January 24.
The warrant states that the 6-foot-3, 195-pound field general will be charged with both a straight assault count, as well as Assault with Intent to Do Bodily Harm Less Than Murder.
After winning state championships as a freshman and sophomore, in 2011 and 2012 respectively, and then getting off to a fast start this past fall, Campbell began encountering a series of off-the-field problems related to his behavior.
These problems culminated with the alleged January security-guard attack.
During Cass Tech’s 2014 tournament trek, Campbell served two in-game disciplinary suspensions when he was sidelined for a few early quarters of the Technicians’ playoff-run that ended in the final four. In the wake of defeat in the semifinals, a 28-0 shutout at the hands of Novi Detroit Catholic Central in a game where he looked thoroughly flustered throughout, Campbell scuffled with a C.C. player in the handshake line, throwing a punch.
Reports also point to his reputed role in a fight that took place in the pre-game warm-ups of a basketball game in early January that he wasn’t apart of – he had been playing on the Cass Tech hoops squad until his arrest.
Committed to play his college football in East Lansing with Michigan State since August, (a future relationship that as of today seems far from a sure-thing, despite the pledge), prior to this most recent incident, Campbell was hit with a three-to-five day suspension from school and a one-game suspension from the team in the fall related to the altercation in the semifinals
His status with the Detroit Public School District and with the Cass Tech football team remain up in the air right now.
