FOOTBALL: De La Salle comes up short against Toledo Central Catholic 21-14
DETROIT – Warren De La Salle came up just short Saturday afternoon of defeating Ohio power Toledo Central Catholic. The Pilots hung tough until the final seconds, falling to the Fighting Irish 21-14, in the final game of the Prep Kickoff Classic at Wayne State University.
To their credit, the De La Salle defense played tough against Toledo CC quarterback, and Notre Dame commit DeShone Kizer. Kizer finished 13-28, for 185 yards, one touchdown, and an interception. That lone touchdown came when Kizer found receiver Jermiah Braswell streaking down the sideline wide open for a 35-yard touchdown, with 1:28 left in the first quarter.
After waiting behind Michigan freshman quarterback Shane Morris for his opportunity to play at De La Salle, Giovanni Rescigno played well in his debut as fulltime starter. Rescigno went 15-33 on the day, for 225 yards and two scores. The first of his two touchdowns tied the ballgame at 7-7 with 2:29 left before the half. Rescigno connected with Shane’s younger brother Brent Morris for the 18-yard touchdown. De La Salle had to feel good about heading into halftime tied with the defending Division 2 state champs from Ohio.
Toledo Catholic Central came out of the locker with a few tricks up their sleeves, surprising De La Salle with a successfully executed onside kick. Just one play later, running back Tre’Von Wade broke it 37 yards for a touchdown to put Toledo CC up 14-7. Wade eventually proved to be too much to handle for the De La Salle defense, running for 186 yards, on 22 carries.
The biggest play of the game came when Wade found daylight for a 67-yard rushing touchdown that put Toledo up 21-7 with 9:15 remaining in the third. De La Salle responded when Rescigno hit Carter Wilson for a touchdown from 11 yards out on late in the quarter, but that would be it for the Pilots. Toledo CC closed the final quarter out on a strong note defensively, stuffing De LaSalle and holding on for the 21-14 win. De La Salle will have to wait two weeks until facing Chandler Park Academy on September 14 to try to grab their first win of the season.
