FOOTBALL: Detroit PSL Title Game Loaded With Division 1 Prospects Between Cass Tech and ML King
The Detroit Public School League football season will culminate with a highly anticipated matchup between Martin Luther King (7-0) and Cass Tech (8-0) Friday night at Ford Field. The longtime city rivals come in with unblemished records, and bragging rights on the line. Fifteen players with Division 1 offers will touch the field Friday between both teams, with a dozen or more prospects also receiving college interest. I highlight several of them here.
Cass Tech 2015 RB Mike Weber: Arguably the best overall player in the state, the 5-10, 205-pound Weber has run for over 1,500 yards this season, while racking up offers along the way. Michigan,Michigan State,Ohio State,Tennessee,Wisconsin and Nebraska are all after Weber.
King 2014 WR-DB-KR Avonte Maddox: You’ll be hard pressed to find anyone in the state that has all the capabilities of Maddox. At 5-9, 165-pounds Maddox has speed for days, and is a playmaker at all three phases of the game. He’s committed to Pittsburgh, but his senior campaign has other schools hot on his tail.
Cass Tech 2014 DB Damon Webb: If you want to lockdown your opponents best wide receiver, then Webb is your guy. At 6-0, 180-pounds, Webb has good size, and even better technique. Teams won’t often throw the Ohio State commits way, and understandably so.
King 2014 DB Jalen Embry: One of the best athletes around, Embry had offers at wide receiver and cornerback, but chose to play at Iowa a couple of weeks ago. Embry also has lockdown ability at 6-0, 172-pounds and had a two interception performance last week against Mumford.
Cass Tech 2015 QB Jayru Campbell: He’s 6-3, and explosive, and has started for Cass Tech since day one. Campbell has help lead Cass Tech to two state titles, and still has a year of eligibility left. He turned down offers from Alabama,Notre Dame and Wisconsin to become a Michigan State Spartan.
King 2015 LB Tyriq Thompson: The 6-1, 210-pounder is the son of former King and Michigan standout Clarence Thompson, but has made a name for himself. Illinois,Wisconsin and Michigan State has offered the hard hitting linebacker who has only played seven games of Michigan high school football.
Cass Tech 2014 LB Will White: Probably the heart and soul of the stout Cass Tech defense, White seems to always be around the ball or in the action. The 6-1, 215-pounder committed to Buffalo last weekend after originally committing to Toledo.
King 2014 LB Carl Fuller: Fuller is a tall, lean linebacker at 6-3, 210-pounds and is pretty good in pass rush and tough against the run. Fuller holds offers from the likes of Syracuse,Eastern Michigan,Western Michigan and Toledo.
Cass Tech 2015 DE Keith Jones: He may not have adequate size at 6-0, 240-pounds but Jones has that nastiness it takes to play on the defensive line. He uses his leverage well to get off the blocks of offensive linemen, and and is strong enough to handle the position.
King 2014 RB Raymond Mitchell: Mitchell isn’t a well known name like his teammates, but his play speaks for him. Only 5-8, 170-pounds, Mitchell runs tougher than his size will indicate, and even had a 241 yard and four touchdown performance last week.
Other notable players to keep an eye on for Cass Tech: 2014 LB Deon Drake, 2014 RB Gary Hosey, 2015 DE Josh Alabi, 2016 DB LaVert Hill and 2016 OL-DT Michael Onwenu.
Other notable players to keep an eye on for King: 2014 QB James Speight, 2014 DE-LB Dayvon Austin, 2014 WR-DB Omari McCauley, 2016 DB Jesse Johnson, and 2016 DB Donte Boyd.
