FOOTBALL NEWS: Holiday Edition – Stars & Stripes Grinding
While some took the days before the July 4th holiday to relax and unwind, a few of the state’s best high school players were on their grind and getting things done.
Detroit Cass Tech cornerback Damon Webb was the only player from the state to be selected to participate in this week’s, “The Opening,” an elite Nike-sponsored event in Oregon that plays host to over 100 of the nation’s top college recruits in a three-day camp. Webb (5-foot-11, 180 pounds), committed to Ohio State, was impressing from the camp’s opening snap, snaring a couple of interceptions and pass-deflections in the first set of 7-on-7 drills Wednesday afternoon.
Last year as a junior, he filled the stat sheet for the Technicians in the secondary, snaring seven interceptions, causing 12 pass break-ups, forcing five fumbles and corralling a total of 45 tackles.
He is one of a flock of Division I college recruits set to dot the line-up this fall for two-time defending state champion Cass Tech, a runaway favorite to pull the three-peat come Thanksgiving time down at Ford Field.
Transferring to Cass Tech last year after playing his freshman and sophomore seasons in the Catholic League at University Detroit-Jesuit, Webb will be looking for his second state-title ring in 2013, not No. 3 like most of his teammates with the Technicians.
While Webb was venturing to the West Coast to show off his skills on the gridiron, Farmington’s Curtis Brunson and Muskegon’s Malik King, were getting their college plans in order, committing to Division I schools in the Midwest before the holiday kicked-off.
Both are headed to the Mid-American Conference, with Brunson (5-foot-11, 175 pounds), an athletic and versatile threat in the secondary, committing to Ohio University and King (6-foot-5, 285 pounds), a big and agile, offensive lineman, committing to Ball State.
Like Webb, Brunson and King each hail from winning programs on the gridiron in high school and are going to winning programs at the college level.
Farmington has qualified for the playoffs in each of the last five straight seasons, the past two with Brunson as a starter at safety and wide receiver.
Muskegon hasn’t missed the postseason since 1999 and appeared in the Division 2 state championship game last fall, with King in the trenches helping engineer a high-powered Big Reds’ offense.
Ball State and Ohio both finished 9-4 in 2012.
