FOOTBALL RECRUITING: Gibbs heading down south, commits to NC State

Detroit Cass Tech senior football star Kenton Gibbs once thought his future was in the Big Ten Conference at the University of Illinois.
Now, he knows for sure it’s in the Atlantic Coast Conference with North Carolina State.
Gibbs (6-foot-3, 295 pounds), a three-year starter on both sides of the line at Cass Tech, committed to the Wolf Pack on Wednesday afternoon, following de-committing from Illinois before the New Year.
He chose N.C. State over 10 other scholarship offers, including ones from Pitt, Wisconsin and Cincinnati.
In college, Gibbs is projected to play on defense as a rush end to take advantage of his speed and natural athleticism. Attacking the quarterback is his specialty.
The past two seasons, Gibbs helped lead Cass Tech to back-to-back state championships. Cass Tech had close to two dozen Division I college recruits on its 2012 roster – the most by any team in state history.
Showing a penchant for playing big in big games, Gibbs scooped up a fumble and returned it 58 yards for a touchdown in the Technicians state championship-game victory over Novi Detroit Catholic Central down at Ford Field back in November.
