Frankenmuth blows out Freeland to keep pace with Bridgeport in TVC East race

FRANKENMUTH — The Eagles won their eighth straight Friday night, pounding visiting Freeland, 65-23, to remain a game behind league-leading Bridgeport in the Tri-Valley Conference East race.

Senior Cory Thompson dropped 24 points — 14 in the fourth, including four 3-pointers — for Frankenmuth (14-2, 10-2 TVC East) to lead all scorers, while Ben Reinert added 16. Davin Reif had nine off the bench in the running-clock win.

Joshua Elliott hit three 3-pointers to lead Freeland (10-7, 7-5 TVC East) with nine points.

Frankenmuth led 15-7 after one quarter, then used a 14-0 run in the second quarter, outscoring Freeland 18-4 in the frame to lead 33-11 at the half. The Eagles hit six of their nine 3-pointers in the third quarter, leading 48-18 entering the fourth.

The win allowed Frankenmuth to keep pace with Bridgeport (17-1, 11-1 TVC East), which won its third straight following the 43-38 loss in Frankenmuth on Feb. 7 that snapped the Bearcats’ 53-game regular-season win streak.

The Eagles still need help to catch the Bearcats for the league title, though.

Bridgeport finishes with a home game against Standish-Sterling (7-9, 4-8 TVC East) on Feb. 28 and a road contest against Essexville Garber (9-8, 7-5 TVC East). Frankenmuth gets a home date against Alma (12-6, 8-4 TVC East) — the last team to beat them, back on Jan. 24 — and a road game against Birch Run (2-14, 0-12 TVC East), sandwiched between non-conference road games against Flint Southwestern and Bay City Western.
