GIRLS BASKETBALL: Freshman Destiny Pitts’ 26 points helps Country Day top Chandler Park Academy, 48-26
CLAWSON – Detroit Country Day head coach Frank Orlando spoke highly of his talented freshman, Destiny Pitts after their, 48-26, win over Chandler Park Academy.
Pitts scored a game-high 26 points, going 4-6 from behind the arch and snagged 8 rebounds.
"What a great basketball sense she has," he said. "That’s what I like about her. She thinks during the game and she understands what she’s trying to do.
"She’s an extremely good player to be a freshman."
Pitts gave a lot of credit to her teammates, who collectively put together a great defensive performance on the night. Country Day led 12-0 after one quarter, forcing Chandler Park into tough shots all night.
"Our defense played great and we came out with great intensity," Pitts said. "In the beginning of the game we said we wanted to go hard on defense and we showed that on the court."
Chandler Park Academy (8-10) managed to get their first points of the game in the second quarter, on a basket by Thelma Williams;but by then they were already down big, 14-2.
The Lady Yellowjackets then went on an 8-0 run in the final five minutes of the quarter, capped off by a 3-pointer by Jordan Wright, to go into the locker room up 22-2.
"They were relentless tonight and I give them a lot of credit," Orlando said of team. "Chandler Park is a very athletic team to play and they weren’t hitting shots, but we kept them from penetrating and that was key."
Senior Jada Ivy led Chandler Park Academy with 12 points and 12 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to keep her team alive in the state playoffs. This was Country Day’s fourth straight year knocking Chandler Park Academy off in the state playoffs, the first in which Pitts was apart of, but still meant a lot to.
"This win was very important, because they were talking a lot of stuff on Twitter," she said. "They said it was them against Asia (Doss), but we played for Country Day and we did great."
Doss is still hampered by a sore ankle, but still managed to add 4 points, 6 rebounds and 3 assists, while Kristina Grace chipped in 10 points. Zauria Kilgo had 5 points for the Lady Eagles.
Country Day (21-1) will now play Ferndale on Thursday for the regional final.
"Tonight was a big win, but we have to keep looking forward to the next game and not look to far ahead," said Pitts.
