GIRLS BASKETBALL RECRUITING: MSU picks up commitment from Benton Harbor’s diverse talent Gondrezick
BENTON HARBOR – Kalabrya Gondrezick is bound for the Big Ten.
Gondrezick, the Benton Harbor High School girls basketball star, committed to Michigan State University over the weekend.
A slick, smart and speedy 5-foot-9 junior point guard, she is considered a Top 10 player in the state and a Top 100 player in the country (ESPN has her slotted at No. 53).
“I’m just very excited to get the chance to play my college career in the same state I grew up playing and learning the game in,” she said. “I love basketball and I think Michigan State is the best place for me to go and continue my love for the game at the next level.”
Besides the Spartans, other college program’s Gondrezick was looking at included the University of Michigan, Notre Dame, Louisville and Northwestern.
High-grade hooping is in Gondrezick’s blood.
Her father Grant and her uncle Glen both played in the NBA, her mother and head coach Lisa (Harvey), played big-time college basketball at Louisiana Tech and won a NCAA National Championship in the late 1980s and her sister and Benton Harbor teammate, Kysre, is one of the state’s best sophomore Blue Chip prospects.
Kalabrya is already a two-time all-state selection in Class B.
Last winter, she averaged close to a triple-double a night.
That is not a misprint.
Gondrezick’s 2013 stat line was Magic Johnson-like, a robust 18 points, 10 assists and eight rebounds per game.
Currently, Benton Harbor is 4-2, while Michigan State is 9-5 and looking for its fifth straight appearance in the NCAA Tournament under head coach Suzy Merchant.
The Gondrezick commitment is Merchant’s and her staff’s second pledge for the Spartans 2015 recruiting class, joining Victoria Gaines out of Indiana.
